Course   Objectives

This   course is designed to introduce: 1) the basic principles of functional   neuroanatomy that are relevant to the process of localization; 2) systematic   approaches to the evaluation and differential diagnosis of patients who   present with common neurologic symptoms; 3) the epidemiology, etiology,   clinical manifestations, radiographic manifestations, pathology,   pathophysiology, and treatments of important neurologic conditions.

Course   Description

The course includes systemic illustrations of   fundamental theories, knowledge and skills of this subject. We will introduce   the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment and preventions of neurological   diseases, especially common ones, eg. stroke, seizures and movement   disorders, etc.

Course Requirements:

Through the lectures and practice, the student   should be able to: 1) obtain a complete and reliable neurologic history; 2) perform   a focused and reliable neurologic examination; 3) recognize symptoms that may   signify neurologic disease; 4) distinguish normal from abnormal findings on a   neurologic examination; 5) localize the likely site or sites in the nervous   system where a lesion could produce a patient's symptoms and signs; 6) formulate   a differential diagnosis based on lesion localization, time course, and   relevant historical and demographic features; 7) describe the use and   interpretation of common tests used in neurologic disease; 8) utilize the   principles to the management of common neurologic diseases; 9) recognize   situations in which it is appropriate to request neurologic consultation.

Instructor's Academic Background:

Prof. Hong Zhen is a Professor of Neurology, who received his MD degree from Shanghai Medical University in   1980. He has been a neurologist for more than 30 years, and is recognized as   an expert on the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases (epilepsy,   stroke, dementia, Parkinson disease, etc), neuroepidemiology, and clinical   pharmacology. He currently serves as the Director of Institute of Neurology,   Huashan Hospital, Dean of Neurology, Fudan University, Chief of Epilepsy   Center, Fudan University, member of Standing Committee of China Neurological   Society, Vice-chair of EEG and Epilepsy Group of Chinese Neurological Society,   President of Chinese Association Against Epilepsy. He has more than 150 publications in recent years with focus on epilepsy, stroke, Alzheimer’s   disease and neuroepidemiology.
