Instructor and Course Evaluation for

MED130210.01 - Regional Anatomy (Spring 2015)

What do you like best about this course (e.g. pace of the class, textbook/powerpoints, presentations made by the instructor)? What were its major strengths? What did you learn and how did it affect you?

Powerpoints

Major strengths: Concise and informative, contains many pictures to facilitate better understanding of concepts, given few days prior to class so that students can study in advance (other lecturers do not do that)

What did I learn?
-I master the concepts very quickly

How did it affect me?
-I find anatomy a very interesting subject.
-Learning has never been so pleasurable

What other ideas would you suggest to improve this course (e.g., changes in course structure, assignments/exams or class location and equipment)? What advice would you give to future students?

After attending the systemic anatomy class in year 2, semester 1, i think that the lecturer shouldnt give students review questions/ past year questions, which are exactly the same as the questions that appeared during the exams.

This earned the almost perfect course (excellent powerpoints, patient and dedicated lecturer, state of art laboratory) a bad reputation, because this caused many students to simply study the review questions few days or even a day before the exam (i witnessed this personally). Many dilligent students, including myself, think that review questions shouldnt be given so that students will study harder and earn the grades by studying each and every lecture dilligently, instead of mere last minute study simply for the sake of the exam.

Moreover, future students might learn about this 'loop hole' from their seniors and end up studying the review questions prior to the exams - eventually they will learn nothing.

Other than that, I think that this course is excellent and I enjoy the lectures and labs.

What do you like best about this course (e.g. pace of the class, textbook/powerpoints, presentations made by the instructor)? What were its major strengths? What did you learn and how did it affect you?

I like the pace of the class and the way the professor teaches us. He made the lesson very interesting and has many ways to help me understand the subject easily.

I think the pace (the teaching speed for the content) is the major strength.

I learned how to identify the tissue and organs in the body and the results of injuries to them. This improves my understanding about the human system and know how to take care of myself better.

What other ideas would you suggest to improve this course (e.g., changes in course structure, assignments/exams or class location and equipment)? What advice would you give to future students?

I wish that we can extend the time for the lab and less number of student for each cadaver.

Listen and class and memorise the positions of each organs and tissue before each lesson.

What do you like best about this course (e.g. pace of the class, textbook/powerpoints, presentations made by the instructor)? What were its major strengths? What did you learn and how did it affect you?

My favorite part about the course is the teaching style. Prof. Zhang was extremely clear in his lectures and rarely do I feel confused about the materials. I also really enjoyed how the lectures followed the book almost completely. The PowerPoint presentations were my number one source to look up information. Prof. Zhang always have different sources of illustrations and most of the time even color labelled to indicate importance. Another part of this course that is should be mentioned, is the accessibility of not just a comprehensive human body museum, but also the lab rooms to look at specimens outside of class time. Kudos to prof. Zhang for willing to interrupt his cooking time to open lab rooms for us.

What other ideas would you suggest to improve this course (e.g., changes in course structure, assignments/exams or class location and equipment)? What advice would you give to future students?

My least favorite part of the course was probably the nervous system. It's actually also my favorite. I know, I'm stating a paradox, but really, it is a love-hate relationship. I complained about the sequence of the lectures while I was learning, but now that I've completed it, I don't think changing the sequence would of helped. Perhaps I would suggest to not try to connect the pieces together before teaching them. Instead, spend more time tying them up at the end. For example: there's no need to mention the different tracts on the lecture for peripheral nervous system. The tracts can be mentioned in the spinal cord and then spend ten minutes at the end to tie it to the previous class regarding the spinal cord. Most students probably don't see a difference, but it really does matter to those who have to make sure they know everything. I looked up so so many things before they were taught and that used up a lot of my time. Prof. Zhang eventually did teach everything, but I really think he can work on chunking that chapter better so he can say 'not very important now, learn it later.' Less often.

As for future students, I'm gonna bypass the regular advices of stay on schedule, don't fall behind stuff. Instead, I'd really like to tell them to take advantage of the museum and the lab. Especially the museum because there isn't a formaldehyde problem. Also, to visualize and form a mental human body model while prof. Zhang is giving the lecture.

»Other (please elaborate) Is very passionate about not just the subject but also about teaching

What specific advice would you give to help your instructor improve your learning in this course?

When I listen to lectures, I generally like to hear a flow of the materials. The professors have a big picture that they want to share with me, but they often get too caught up in the details and teach me chunks of unlinked information. It is usually up to me to connect the dots and finally see the big idea. I would suggest prof. Zhang to work on connecting his teachings. Avoid using 'but' so much. It doesn't connect the lecture and sometimes even confuse me.

Any other comments you may have:

If there's a possibility of integrating WileyPlus with Orion into this course, I think it would be fabulous. With the extra online practice questions, interactive forums, and 3D images of real dissected specimens.

What do you like best about this course (e.g. pace of the class, textbook/powerpoints, presentations made by the instructor)? What were its major strengths? What did you learn and how did it affect you?

The best part is the dissection of the cadaver, as during the dissection you are able to view the anatomy of the human body first hand. Such experience is not possible to replicate via book or presentations. The viewing of the cadavers allows for one to see the way human body is organized simplifying the task of learning anatomy.

What other ideas would you suggest to improve this course (e.g., changes in course structure, assignments/exams or class location and equipment)? What advice would you give to future students?

Suggestions include improving the ventilation of the dissection room. It is counterproductive to learn in an environment permeated with formaldehyde.

What do you like best about this course (e.g. pace of the class, textbook/powerpoints, presentations made by the instructor)? What were its major strengths? What did you learn and how did it affect you?

I am learning a lot more in regional anatomy than in systemic anatomy because we have a chance to observe the body parts intacted with the whole body. And struggling to find the right organ or tissue we are looking for actually makes us remember about it more efficiently.

What other ideas would you suggest to improve this course (e.g., changes in course structure, assignments/exams or class location and equipment)? What advice would you give to future students?

I hope the prof does teaching a big shorter so that we can have some more time to dissect. Maybe he can talk about how we can dissect certain part at the beginning of the class and talk about theoretical explanation after dissection or in next class. So we can understand his lecture much better.

What do you like best about this course (e.g. pace of the class, textbook/powerpoints, presentations made by the instructor)? What were its major strengths? What did you learn and how did it affect you?

The physical practice of dissecting a body. Detailed powerpoints. I learned the difficulty of matching real life to diagrams.

What other ideas would you suggest to improve this course (e.g., changes in course structure, assignments/exams or class location and equipment)? What advice would you give to future students?

I would split it over more class periods as working for 2-3 hours straight is quite exhausting. Also it would be nice to have the masks and foot coverings already prepared. Future students should be ready to dissect the bodies from their previous anatomy class(es).

Be more concise and clear in terms of what we should be doing each lab. Often I find our group confused as to what we should be looking for before moving on from layer to layer.

I like the dissecting of cadavers the most in this course.

What other ideas would you suggest to improve this course (e.g., changes in course structure, assignments/exams or class location and equipment)? What advice would you give to future students?

I would like the teacher to be more fair and attentive to every student in the class and not just one student. For example, I feel like the teacher pays a lot of attention to jessie which is not fair. Moreover, it is not fair that the teacher is able to help the students that can speak chinese but not the students that speak English equally.

That it allowed us to get hands-on. Learned structures more definitively and allowed them to be better remembered.

What other ideas would you suggest to improve this course (e.g., changes in course structure, assignments/exams or class location and equipment)? What advice would you give to future students?

(Much) Higher emphasis on dissection techniques; not to just be left alone the first hour. Also, having lectures in classrooms separately is inefficient usage of time.

the power points are very clear, mr zhang take his time to patiently answer my questions, all the curriculum are arranged neatly and ppt are sent the day before for us to read before doing dissection which is very important.

sometimes, mr. zhang's english is a little bit hard to understand and the class could be done in the new lab. also, going from one class to another is a waste of time.
