Research Description

Depressive disorder is the heterogenic disease. Activation of inflammatory, oxidative, and nitrosative stress pathways plays an important role in the pathophysiology. Increased levels of proinflammatory mediators are now well established in depression. Our laboratory recently reported the involvement of astroglia in the rat chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) induced depression model. We also got the data in which it showed the activation of microglia and the increase of proinflammatory cytokine IL-1beta in the hippocampus of depression model rats . These observations suggest a primary role for inflammation in the pathogenesis of depression. Detection of the inflammation in the brain will lead to a greater understanding of depression mechanisms, and will identify potential therapeutic targets to limit inflammation in the brain and improve neurological function in our depression model and ultimately in patients with depressive disorder.
