Dr Yong Xie's major research interest is focused on protein engineering and his current research projects include:
1. Development of an antibody-based vaccine against swine foot-and-mouth disease. FMD is a highly contagious and economically devastating disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, particularly domestic livestock species such as cattle, goats, and swine. This project explores the possibility of creating an effective and safe FMD vaccine candidate.
2. Characterization of a novel mammalian selenocysteine-containing protein (Selenoprotein). Selenoprotein is a protein normally found in patients with auto-immune disease, and cells infected with HIV. This project involves characterization of a newly discovered novel selenoprotein.
3. Characterization of a taxol-resistant hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell line. The frequent occurrence of drug resistance of cancer cells to chemotherapeutic drugs usually is a major problem for the treatment of HCC, and drug resistance has been attributed to a number of mechanisms. This project explores the drug resistance mechanism(s) using a taxol-resistant HCC cell line.
