Evaluation

Final marks of the field research will be based on an assessment of the following assignments:

1)Research Collaboration Exercise (5%)

In the third class (2016-9-20), each group will be randomly assigned a research topic and you will have one week to collaborate with your partners to collect necessary information about this topic. You can use all kinds of information resources, including but not limited to the library, online news, Wikipedia, etc. In the fourth class (2016-9-27), your group is going to give a presentation about this topic (around 5 minutes for each group). This is the first task of this class and the aim is to enhance close collaboration.

2)Proposal (20%)

Each group will prepare a proposal for the field research before they formally start. The proposal should include at least the following information:

1.Your research question

2.Background of the research question

3.Some necessary literature review

4.Subjects of the study

5.Measurement

6.Data-collection method

7.Analysis

8.Schedule

9.Budget

10.References

3)Journal (20%)

Each group is required to maintain written journals for the duration of the project (no less than three entries and no more than five entries per week). The journal contains the details of the field research and thus would be extremely helpful for the final report.

4)Questions related to the Reading Stuff (10%)

Students should prepare questions related to the reading stuff. More details can be found in the schedule below.

5)Final Presentation (20%)

Student groups will be required to give a 15-minute final presentation. The presentations should not be a mere recounting of the research details but bring into focus the connection between broader issues of development and the students’ personal experience.

6)Final Report (25%)

The final report should be a well-written article in which students are required to present their unique findings in a broader research context. The structure of the final report is as follows:

1.Title Page with information of authors

2.Abstract

3.Background

4.Research question(s)

5.The contributions of your research

6.Literature review

7.Research design (your research subject, measurement, data-collection method, and your analytical strategies)

8.Presentation of your findings

9.Conclusion and discussion

10.References

7)Questions about the Textbook Chapters (5%), Field Trip Report (5%), and Review Report (5%)

[This only applies to the students from Queen’s]

Due to credit hour difference between Fudan and Queen’s students, Queen’s students are required to submit some extra works, which include the questions about the textbook chapters, a field trip report, and several review reports. Students from Queens are expected to finish reading the book chapters and send the questions to the TA by (2016-9-11).

The field report will focus on personal experience in Shanghai, and it is not a formal essay. Students should view this report to be an opportunity to reflect your experiences in Shanghai and China in general. It is around 1000 words. Since the field trip is subject to the arrangement of the SSDPP, its due date would be decide by the TA.

The review report should be based on each of the four sample articles (four review reports in total). In this review report, students should summarize the major contents, describe the research method used, and comment on this article/report’s relevance to their current research. Each review report is expected to be around 400 words. The TA decides its due date.

Final grades will include +/- designations when applicable. Late work will be penalized.
